How Long Do Balloons Really Last?

We get asked this more than anything else. Someone is planning a party for Saturday and wants to know if the balloons can arrive Thursday. Or the garland from last weekend still looks good and they are wondering if it will make it to grandma's birthday next month.

The honest answer is that it depends almost entirely on where the balloons live between now and then. Here is what we have learned after a lot of installs around Arlington and the rest of the Metroplex.

The short version

Air filled garlands and columns kept indoors will usually go weeks, sometimes a month or more. The same piece outdoors has no guarantee and often gives you a single day. Helium bouquets indoors float at least three days and usually longer, while helium outdoors is anyone's guess.

Those are ranges, not promises. We cannot guarantee balloons will last a set number of days once they leave us, and any decorator who gives you a firm number is guessing.

Latex is a natural product

Latex comes from rubber trees. That is what gives a good balloon its soft finish and its color, and it is also the reason it breaks down. Oxygen works through the surface over time. The shine goes first, then the balloon clouds slightly, then it softens. How fast that happens depends on what the balloon is sitting in.

We use high quality balloons and materials. Even so, some will pop or deflate sooner than expected, and that is the nature of the material rather than a defect.

What shortens a balloon's life

Heat and direct sunlight

This is the big one in Texas. Direct sun heats the air inside a balloon, the air expands, and the latex stretches past what it can hold. A garland that would last three weeks in a hallway can start popping in an afternoon on a sunny porch. Even indoors, a spot in front of a west facing window in August is doing the same thing on a slower timeline.

The ride home

A hot car is the fastest way to lose a bouquet you just picked up. So is a full one. Balloons pressed against a bike rack, a seatbelt buckle, or a stack of party supplies will find the sharp edge every time. Run the air conditioning, clear the back seat, and go straight home.

Surfaces and greenery

Brick, stucco, textured ceilings, and stone all abrade latex where it rests against them. Foliage is worse, since leaves and branches move in the wind and work at the same spot for hours. If we are installing against any of these we plan for it, but it is worth knowing when you are picking a backdrop.

Kids and pets

No explanation needed. Worth planning the placement around it.

Indoors and outdoors are not what you assume

A room with doors or windows open to the outside counts as outdoors. Wind, humidity, and sunlight get in, and the balloons respond to that the same way they would in the yard.

This catches people out with garages, covered patios, and venues that prop the doors during setup. If air is moving through the space, plan for outdoor timelines.

Helium runs on a different clock

Helium balloons are not losing air through a hole. The helium molecule is small enough to pass straight through the latex, which is why a bouquet gradually sinks rather than deflating all at once. Indoors, our helium balloons generally float for at least three days, and usually a good deal longer. Outdoors in the heat, that window shrinks fast.

Six things that help

  1. Keep them out of direct sun, indoors and out.
  2. Set the room somewhere cool. Air conditioning buys you days.
  3. Do not leave them in a parked car, even for twenty minutes.
  4. Clear space in your vehicle before pickup.
  5. Keep them off rough walls and away from bushes and trees.
  6. For an outdoor event, schedule the install as close to start time as we can.

What we do guarantee

Anything we pop in transport or during setup, we replace. That part is on us and always has been. What happens after we hand the balloons over depends on the conditions they sit in, which is why we would rather tell you the truth up front than promise a number we cannot control.

If you are planning an outdoor event in July, we will say so and we will talk through timing with you. Sometimes the answer is a smaller piece installed later in the day. Sometimes it is moving the focal point into the shade.
